found the above article for you to read up on.

Its very sad indeed. Is it true that the Carlton hotel, downtown Johannesburg had to close down because of crime?
Heard you can still have good rooftop parties! With enough security. Is it true that the Carlton hotel, downtown Johannesburg had to close down because of crime?
Possibly , it was closed in 1997 i think

but i hear that there are plans to re-open it for the 2010 soccer world cup, im not sure how true that is as the Carlton Complex is now owned by Transnet and they have stated that they are not interested in the hospitality industry unless there is a solid financial backing for the project.
Yes true indeed. As mentioned by Zim$ and ZXCV, the building was sold to Transnet. Most businesses relocated to Midrand and Sandton however, there is a drive to 鈥榗lean up鈥?JNB. The plans are to restore JNB to it鈥檚 former glory. It is questionable if they will succeed. We will have to get the Nigerians, Zimbabweans etc out of the city to accomplish this dream. I just hope this does not stay a dream only.
That could have been the final nail.....but its profits started declining in early 90s.......the relocation of most businesses to Midrand was the begining of the decline of the Joburg CBD........
It really is a shame Darth, the Carlton Hotel used to be such a beautiful place from what I remember. There was also the Johannesburger, remember? However, I have also heard that Jhb CBD is going to be spruced up for the 2010 soccer so lets wait and see what miracle will come of that.
